Collector Returns Mayan Artefact to Guatemala

A collector returned an artifact that disappeared from the Mayan site of Piedras Negras in the 1960s to Guatemala. After the piece reappeared in Paris in 2019 during an auction, Guatemala objected and was finally returned during a ceremony on Monday, Oct. 25.

A tablet with the oldest-known ghost drawing was discovered. The tablet also includes instructions on how to exorcise an unwanted spirit. The ritual wasn’t symbolic, but a literal ritual with the last line warning “do not look behind you.”
