Metcalf is a 100% employee-owned and operated company. What does that mean? How does that play into the work we do? October was Employee Ownership Month and we wanted to share what ownership means to us.
Our company is one of over 6,000 businesses in the United States that operates as an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Program). At its surface, this means our company shares are divided out to employees as a retirement plan. Beneath the surface is an ownership culture that motivates, drives, and brings us all together towards the common goal of success.
“An effective ownership culture, the research shows, is one that generates lots of ideas from a well informed and highly involved workforce. Companies that have these high-involvement, idea-generating cultures, generate an incremental 6% to 11% added growth per year over what their prior performance relative to their industries would have predicted.”
At Metcalf, we have cultivated a pretty amazing culture. We support each other and do our best to provide a good work/life balance. Our employees are our most valuable assets and everyone brings something unique to the table. Especially now, during COVID times, we have (distantly) come closer together, thinking of creative ways to utilize our expertise to keep our company moving forward. And the thing is, it’s been exciting to think outside the box and to not only consider, but implement new ways to bring in business. We are operating in areas we’ve never thought to explore before. Anyone who has an idea, or knows someone who needs a service performed to preserve history or culture is able to voice it and be heard.
Perhaps that’s the key. Ownership gives everyone a voice because we all have skin in the game. Success for one means success for all.
