THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF UTAH: 12,000 YEARS IN TWO DAYS
- How long have people lived in what we now call Utah?
- When did people start making pottery?
- What is an atlatl and how do they work?
- When did people start growing corn?
- How does radiocarbon dating work?
- How is archaeological research funded?
- What is historical archaeology?
- Did they have domesticated animals in pre-contact times?
- How do archaeologists study the past?
- Is it true there are ancient Native American sites beneath the streets of Downtown Salt Lake City?
These are but some of the questions we will explore in this two day workshop.
Day 1 will be in a classroom setting and Day 2 will be spent visiting two of the most important archaeological sites in the Great Basin; Danger Cave and Juke Box Cave. Danger Cave has a record of human use going back 12,000 years and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You will be able to enter the caves and learn about the archaeological research that has been conducted and what archaeologists learned about the ancient inhabitants of these sites. In Juke Box Cave, you will see Historic Native American rock art and learn about the pre-World War II use of the cave by the Army Air Corps stationed at Wendover. Metcalf Archaeology is the exclusive provider of tours to Danger Cave and Juke Box Cave.
This class is designed for adults and older teens who are interested in learning more about the vast archaeological legacy in Utah and surrounding areas.
The workshop consists of two components: a classroom session and a tour of two archaeological sites.
